Dry Eye Syndrome: Types and Causes

Dry eye syndrome (DES) occurs when your eyes lack sufficient lubrication due to decreased tear production or poor tear quality. The main types include evaporative dry eye (caused by oil gland dysfunction) and aqueous deficiency (related to insufficient tear production). These conditions can result from factors like aging, environmental conditions, hormonal changes, or specific medications.

Recognizing The Symptoms

Common symptoms of DES include:

  • A feeling of dryness or irritation in the eyes
  • Eyes feel like they're burning or stinging
  • Eyes water excessively due to irritation
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Blurred vision
  • Eyes tire easily
  • Unusual discharge or stringy mucus
